Icy Tower -
What Icy Tower lacks in storyline, it makes up in game play.
From the moment you click that "Start Game" option, you're in for quite the ride.
You would start in a slow-paced environment, with the floors appearing to be stationary
as you climb up. At the status bar on the left, a meter measures the seconds that pass.
As you climb one floor to another in utmost complacency, you would be brought back to
urgency as the meter rings to signal that the game play would proceed on a quicker pace.
This happens once every sixty seconds, each time hastening the scrolling of the screen
even more. This aspect of the game provides an edge to what might have been just another
mundane casual game.
As for the mechanics of the game, jumping from one ledge to another is nothing out of the ordinary.
However, racing against time compels you to try having your character perform combo moves for quicker
ascension. Mastering techniques for combos might take some time getting used to, but it's no rocket
science. You just need to be able to predict the right timing to jump while running or the right
timing to bounce off the walls, which is what makes combo jumps of about six whole floors successful.
Once you perform a combo jump, a cylinder at the status bar is filled with color which signifies the
beginning of combo mode. The more combos you perform in succession, the more the probability of a
combo attempt to succeed. One advice for an easier game is to set your "Rejump" option to
"Yes" so you would be able to jump continuously without having to repeatedly hit your jump key.
Aside from the game itself, there are other factors in Icy Tower which makes it so addictive. The main characters, Howard the Homeboy and Disco Dave, are both charming in their own rights. Both characters also come with their own background music to boot. If you find them disagreeable in any way, however, Icy Tower 1.2 allows you use your own customized characters which you can either download from the Internet or create yourself. The real kicker for version 1.2 however, is the fact that you can replay and even save your game for future reference or perhaps, just for showing off to friends.
DirectX 7.0 or higher (DirectX enhances Windows with advanced multimedia capabilities. If you do not have DirectX installed on your system, you can download it from www.microsoft.com. DirectX comes pre-installed with all copies of Windows 98 SE and later, so most likely it is already installed on your system).
