Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares - Review of any game should be critical and neutral view on the part of - that dignity, that's shortcomings. But even under this condition of Master of Orion II can only say that this is a masterpiece. The game is fully met the expectations of fans of the first part and became a classic and an example of the genre. Compared with the Master of Orion I in the game much improved and developed everything from the interface and graphics to the fighting and the economy, but at the same time retaining all the advantages and atmospheric first part - a rare example of the golden mean.

The purpose and means of achieving it are the same as in the first part: using a wide range of military, sabotage, economic or diplomatic receptions, you expand the state and eliminate enemies, spoils of victory or destroying all the enemies, or winning the "popular" (more accurately, " all-race "), presidential election, there is a third version of the ending, but about it below.

These elections are held - regardless of your desire - on a regular basis, if populated (any race), the overwhelming majority of the planets on the map, and always run hard, there is a tough "election campaign". Scale of the map corresponds to the real: now the star is not equated with the planet and can have up to 5 planets, each of which can colonize, if conditions allow it, to increase the range of their fleet, you can create a colony on the planet, and an outpost (no population and buildings) - its not afford to lose, we must also fight for each planet separately.

One of the best innovations is the availability of in-game leaders, each of which has its own unique features and eventually develops them, with new titles. Leaders can be captains or governors of star systems, all of them - the individual living under the laws of the game world Master of Orion II: they can be hired any race (not just you), and the destruction of their ship (or system) to die. The number of leaders is limited, so go to the 250 commercials th almost all of them will be someone hired. You can certainly do without them, but they greatly increase the effectiveness of your actions, so it makes sense to employ them, while in the service, you may be 4 and 4, the commander of the governor.

Start the game and its progress. There may be a myriad of options. You choose one of 13 ready-races, each with its own pros and cons, as well as (this is best) can create their own race, giving her any special features: for this you will have 10 points each, plus (for example, the ability to race with no problems to live on the planets of the oceanic type, or, well, there are stones instead of food) takes points minus one (for example, a weakened defense ships) add.

Then you choose the size and characteristics of the galaxy, the number of races in it and the same starting level for them - Pre Warp (a planet without a navy and Technology), Average (a planet, a small fleet, the basic technologies) or Advanced (5 planets in different star systems, a decent fleet, the average technology), as well as the difficulty level, the ability to control the fight in space (do not disable it or not!), the presence of random events and attacks antarantsev (of which below). I would like to say a higher level of complexity (Impossible): there is no opponent has more than just material benefits (including bonuses for the race), but most importantly, it is wiser, therefore, deal with it much more interesting.

Economy. Screen management of the planet is simple, convenient, understandable and reminds Master of Magic. The figures of soldiers and tanks on the screen show the troops on the ground, protecting the planet, the inhabitants of the figure - its people. Each resident (1 figure represents 1 million) could be a farmer, worker or scholar, in addition, studying a special technology, can be in addition to the residents to build androids that perform all these works.

Residents pay taxes to the planet, eat food, conduct research, can build ships or upgrade already in the system, teach the scouts to create buildings, planetary defense system and terraforming, and convert its operational capacity (Industry) in population growth (Housing) or money (Trade Goods). That there are some cosmic minefields or creation of the planet from asteroids! In general, all this must be seen, especially since the schedule - for the time - great.

Diplomacy and intelligence. Opportunities here the sea, just like in real life. Can be extended to other races have different requirements (up to transfer you to their ships or star systems), to regulate the relations of this race with any other, do all sorts of offers - including those from whom "they can not refuse", and computer ambassadors, in their turn may be offended and do not communicate with you for a while. The game consist of various political blocks (usually long-lasting) of the allies and "sympathizers", which is reflected in the presidential election. But the intelligence and subversive activities in the game is underdeveloped, it all comes down to a percentage likelihood of success with a mixture of chance: you just have more intelligence and counterintelligence, and hope that they are lucky. But minus that, frankly, a little.

Science. The basic principle is the same as that in the first part: the entire research work is divided into themes (there are 8), and the topic into sections, each containing 1.4 research. The bottom line is that you can perform only one trial of each section, and other technologies can only be obtained through diplomacy or intelligence, but if your race is the feature of Creative, it will hold all the research section at once, and the price of one. Technologies are many and varied, as in Master of Orion I, but their value was still high, and "knock down the number of" enemy fleet, is technically superior to your strong, almost impossible. In general, technology - is the foundation of all: the development, production, income and, of course, a successful war.

Military action. They are divided into 3 types: battles in space, orbital bombardment (to start them, we must first defeat in the space battle), ground battles. Orbital bombardment is sensible to assume because they are now metered: Your fleet can immediately apply on the planet all the firepower, they burn up everything, and can keep firing and gradually after the destruction of enemy troops on it or take the remaining residents and buildings with their bare hands or (if you for some reason do not take this planet in this race) is proud to turn around and walk away, demonstrating the power of - well, downright R.

Heinlein novel "Star Rangers". Ground battles have not changed, and won there the one with more troops and better, with a small element of luck there, but management, alas, no - we mention one little minus the game. But here's the biggest advantage is a requirement of the extermination of the inhabitants of occupied planets, and their assimilation, and they initially because of dissatisfaction will work through the stump-pack, but then get used to.

Finally, the space battles. This is the main "zest" of the two parts of the game and the main means of achieving victory. Now there are no units of the same type, indicating the number of ships, and you control each ship, which has its own characteristics (including name and experience of the crew). Types of warships is not 6, as in the first part, and an unlimited number, create as many as you want, but if the type is obsolete, it does not matter - the ship can be upgraded, so take the ships to be scrapped to build a new, no longer needed.

All types of ships in the second part are divided into six classes (do not confuse the "type" and "class"!), Differing in size, and size determines the number of crew and space, that is, in the end, all data of ship: firepower, speed, survivability and so on. So the best ship - it Doomstar, capable of single-handedly defeat entire fleets, but to build it, it is necessary to crank a-go-go what scientific and industrial work.

Each planet can now have one of the orbital base (fixed analogue ship), and in addition to some very powerful weapon which can be installed directly on the planet. In space battles themselves added a lot of important and interesting details (including boarding battle, auto fighters and bombers, escape pods) and technical details - now every ship can not only move, but to unfold, each weapon has a range and arc of fire, damage fall not on the general Hit Points, as in the first part, and specifically on the force field, building or system may be damaged any equipment or computer ... The list of innovations goes on and on.

And finally - some more features. In Master of Orion II, just as in the first part, there is a very important planet Orion (logichno!), which suggest that you visit before their opponents. The game's plot will not recount, but the second part it appears that on this very planet Orion, formerly the center of a great civilization is not only an evil guard, but also a friendly person, very powerful though.

And the enemies of a great civilization - "lovely in all respects" antarantsy - have not disappeared and, along with all sorts of cosmic creatures will periodically attack on the world of different races. You can find the lair of the evil-doers, and defeating them, to unite all the races, thus completing the game and become a regular character of all editions of the local mega-popular news agency GNN.

How to complete the game - you just decide on something and the name of "Lord of Orion." As a result, we can say: Master of Orion II will be interesting (to some extent, of course) at all keen on computer games.
